Course Description

The Biotechnician Assistant provides participants with the core knowledge and practical skills required for entry-level biomedical research and careers in biotechnology, all within a 5-day bootcamp style. This includes aseptic handling of cell culture, operation of a thermocycler for quantitative PCR, and observation of live prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells under a fluorescence microscope. As part of the program, participants have the opportunity to take the Biotechnician Assistant Credentialing Exam (BACE) at UCBA. Those who pass the BACE will earn a Biotechnician Assistant industry-recognized credential, in the form of a verifiable digital badge, which was developed by Biotility and adopted by the State of Ohio.

Who Should Register?

Prospective participants are highly recommended to have successfully completed a college-level introductory biology laboratory course (e.g., Biology I Laboratory - BIOL1081L), or equivalent (e.g., AP Biology Labs), which includes experience with micropipettes, a compound microscope, a spectrophotometer, and gel electrophoresis, prior to enrolling in the micro-credential program.

Additional Information

In the laboratory, participants are expected to wear closed-toe shoes (no sandals or slippers), a long sleeve shirt, and long pants.
