Course Description
Participants in UC Aspire’s NEXT Careers I: Microsoft Office Specialist Word course will gain valuable academic, occupational, and technical skills that will prepare learners for the next career move.
This course consists of two parts:
- Academic and career preparation activities such as resume building, job searching, and interviewing skills
- Hands-on technical training in MOS Word
At the end of the course, participants are able to sit for the official MOS Word Associate 2019 (MO-100) exam credential.
This course is approximately 15 weeks long and follows a hybrid format. Week 1 consists of a 4-day in-person bootcamp on UC’s Victory Parkway Campus, and Weeks 2–14 consist of twice-weekly sessions taught virtually via Zoom and Canvas. The final week is when in-person exams are administered for the MOS Word Associate 2019 credential.
Individuals with the Microsoft Office Specialist Word Associate 2019 certification have established their ability to perform administrative tasks such as creating and managing documents; formatting text, paragraphs, and sections; creating tables and lists, applying references; and inserting and formatting objects.

Course Outline
Week 1: Participants will complete a variety of career exploration activities and required assessments, familiarize themselves with course software and technology, and create an Individual Learning Plan and SMART Goals.
Week 2: Participants who successfully complete Week 1 will receive access to the Microsoft Word Specialist software training program. Topics covered this week include Common Office Features, Skills Labs, and Challenge Labs.
Week 3: Email Communication Module, Common Office Features, Skills and Challenge Labs.
Week 4: Common Office Features, Document and Text Basics, Skills Labs, Challenge Labs, and Applied Labs.
Weeks 5-7: Document and Text Basics, Resumes, Skills Labs, Challenge Labs, and Applied Labs.
Week 8: Document and Text Basics, Resumes, Document Formatting and Graphics, Cover Letters, Skills Labs, Challenge Labs, and Applied Labs.
Week 9: Document Formatting and Graphics, Cover Letters, Skills Labs, Challenge Labs, and Applied Labs.
Week 10: Document Formatting and Graphics, Skills Labs, Challenge Labs, and Applied Labs.
Week 11: Job Searching, Academic and Workplace Features, Creating a Certiport Account, Skills Labs, Challenge Labs, and Applied Labs.
Week 12: Academic and Workplace Features, Skills Labs, Challenge Labs, and Applied Labs, Interview Preparation.
Weeks 13-14: MOS Word Associate 2019 Practice Exams, Domain Practice Labs.
Week 15: MOS Word Associate 2019 (MO-100) Exam.
Learner Outcomes
- Develop individual learning and career planning documents through goal setting exercises and skills assessments.
- Identify career planning and job search resources.
- Create a professional resume.
- Develop proficiency with Microsoft Word skills including document management; inserting and formatting text, paragraphs, and sections; managing tables and lists; creating and managing references; inserting and formatting graphic elements; and managing document collaboration.
Who Should Register?
This course is designed for adults ages 18 and older who are ready to build new skill sets and who are interested in Office and Administrative Support careers. It is ideal for individuals with an intermediate level of digital literacy who are comfortable using desktop/laptop computers and want to improve their knowledge and skills in Microsoft Word to obtain the Microsoft Office Specialist Associate certification in Word 2019.
Prerequisites
Participants must attend the Microsoft Office Specialist Word Training- Information Session prior to registering for this course.
Additional Information
Learners must live or work in Ohio. Learners may not be concurrently enrolled in college courses that cover similar material. Learners must present documentation that verifies eligibility at time of orientation; such documentation includes a U.S. birth certificate, a REAL ID compliant identification card, or DHS-issued documentation verifying immigration status.
Learners will also need to fill out an online application for Aspire.
