Research 101 is an introductory course that provides learners with a foundation in research. Through a series of structured, self-paced modules, the course presents core concepts essential to understanding, conducting, and communicating research across the research continuum.
Learners explore topics including:
- Defining and classifying research
- Mentor–mentee expectations
- Identifying research mentors and projects
- Human subjects protections and ethics review processes
- Study design and data analysis basics
- Scientific writing and presentation
- Transparency and rigor
- Introductory NIH grant concepts
- Team science
Instruction is delivered through brief videos, readings, case studies, and discussions that emphasize real-world application and ethical research practices.
By the end of the course, learners are equipped with the foundational knowledge, skills, and resources needed to engage meaningfully in research activities, collaborate effectively within research teams, and navigate the early stages of developing, conducting, and disseminating research.

Learner Outcomes
Learners who complete this course can expect the following outcomes:
- Identify core concepts, terminology, and stages of research.
- Explain ethical principles, regulatory requirements, and protections for human subjects in research.
- List foundational research skills to develop a research question, identify a mentor, and outline a scholarly project.
- Evaluate research practices and examples for rigor, transparency, effective collaboration, and responsible dissemination.
Who Should Register?
This course is designed for individuals who are new to research or preparing to participate in research through a summer program or research lab and are seeking a foundational understanding of the research process.
